Q: Why do you sell so many whistles?
A: There are a lot of answers to this question. First of all, I'm a whistle fanatic - I just love the things. I've searched all over the U.S. and the world looking for new and unique whistles. Second - there are so many uses for whistles that you have to have a huge supply - uses vary from sports to safety to just plain fun. And the final answer - my goal is to have the largest selection of whistles available on the Internet - not sure if I'm there yet but the way we add whistles it can't be far away.
Q: What's the loudest whistle?
A: This is a really tough one! It seems that every manufacturer describes their whistle as "The Loudest". Unfortunately there isn't an international testing organization for whistles so I go by how bad my ears hurt when I blow the whistle in my office. I break down some of what I consider the louder whistles below - NOT ranked by loudest but just kind of grouped by type.
| The Storm |
Plastic - Pea Type. Unique Patented 2 Chamber Design |
| Tornado T2000 |
Plastic - Pealess. High piercing tone |
| Cyclone |
Plastic - Pealess. Lower tone - easier to blow and get great sound |
| Thunderer - Model 63 |
Nickel Plated Brass - Pea Type. Loudest Thunderer (So Says Acme) |
| Signal Horn |
Not really a whistle - Truly a Horn. But really LOUD |
Q: What's your favorite whistle?
A: I love all of my whistles - so how do you pick a favorite. OK - lets say you're going to buy 5 whistles to meet the rigors of daily life. Here's what I would buy:
| 1 - Thunderer Model 63 |
I carry this one on my keychain for safety - loud and will last forever |
| 2 - The Metropolitan |
Just a beautiful collectors whistle. Everyone should have one |
| 3 - Bosuns Pipe |
I love the history and amazing sounds you can make with the Bosuns Pipe |
| 4 - Siren |
A great fun whistle that makes a unique sound - just makes you happy |
| 5 - Crow & Rook Call |
I don't need to call any crows but this would be in my Top 5 |
Q: Can I buy just 1 Whistle?
A: Yes - we ship small whistles orders every day. We normally ship via UPS so that we can track our packages. But sometimes you just want a single whistle (or maybe up to 3) and you don't want to pay that much for shipping. For most of the whistles that we sell we offer U.S. Postal Service shipping for small orders. We charge a flat $2.50 for this service and pack it in a nice cushioned envelope. Never had any problems. Some whistles we just don't ship through the mail - these are normally the more expensive ones. Always call if you have any questions.
Q: What whistle should I use to scare off (insert your worst animal here)?
A: I've had this call concerning dogs, bears, coyotes, birds and a wide assortment of other vermin and pests. I don't really know that there is a correct answer - the advice that I normally give is this: Most animals don't like loud high pitched noises so I recommend either the Tornado T2000 or the Cyclone. No guarantees that it will work - but it's probably the best shot. One of my customers bought the T2000 to try to get a neighbors dog to stop barking - turned out that the dog hated the sound so much that it made it bark even more! I tend to be a bit of a chicken when considering large beasts that would eat me (like bears). My best advice is to not go where the bears are.
Q: What is a Lanyard
A: A lanyard is the thing that you put around your neck and hang your whistle on - think back to your PE Coach in high school - seems like they were all born with these things around their necks. There are several types of lanyards - we sell 2 from stock (Standard - 4 colors and a Premium black) and also can have custom imprinted lanyards made for any purpose and any style.
Q: Why don't you have the sounds of the whistles on your web site like some other sites do?
A: This is one of those "Projects" that I promise I'm going to get to one of these days. It takes a huge amount of time and I want to make sure it is done the Right Way. I'm in my Rube Goldberg thinking stage at the moment trying to come up with a device that will blow the whistles consistently each time with the same amount of force (will also allow me to finally determine who is truly the Loudest). When I do add this to the site it will be on a separate page - a lot of our customers still use dial up - download times can go up tremendously long with this type of feature. In the meantime - feel free to call if you'd like to "Hear before you buy".
Q: What is the most popular whistle?
A:
Well, there's popular and then there's "popular". When a customer wants to buy a lot of whistles and price is a factor, they normally purchase the Windsor Clarion plastic whistle. Great little whistle that is amazingly loud, and comes packaged with a lanyard all for $1.50. We have sold thousands of these whistles to some really big customers, including the U.S. Army. On the other hand - when someone is looking for a high quality metal whistle - the Acme Thunderer series is the best seller. Want a whistle that will last a lifetime, looks great and consistently produces good sound - get any of the Thunderers.
Q: Is there really a company called the Acme Whistle Company?
A: Yep - and I think they were here long before Wile E Coyote. Actually - they are the J. Hudson and Company - in Birmingham UK. In the business of making whistles for over 135 Years - and for my money still the best there is. Check out their web site at: http://www.acmewhistles.co.uk/xcart/customer/home.php
